The difference that matters

The passport is what makes the scratch dispute work

The most common problem is not theft, it is a scratch. Three versions of it circulate: damage that was already there and is pointed out on return, a fingernail-sized mark billed as a whole new body panel, and a charge for the days the scooter is supposedly off the road. None of them is hard to refuse — unless the shop is holding your passport. That is the part that turns a disagreement into a payment. Take the passport out of the equation and the same conversation ends very differently.

Whoever you rent from, do the same thing: film the scooter all the way round before you ride it, coffre open, close on each panel, the mirrors, the exhaust, the floor and the wheels, and say the date out loud. Film it again at the end, before anyone inspects it. Pay by card where you can — a card payment can be disputed, cash cannot.

Where they are just as good

A comparison that only ever favours one side is worth nothing. These are the points where there is no real gap.

Plenty of street shops are honest, and a scooter rented on the corner for one afternoon is rarely a problem.

A street shop can be genuinely cheaper for a single day, and you can look the bike over before you take it.
